It’s Poetry/Prose Day, and today we’ve got a poem by Robert Burns, the national poet of Scotland called Ae Fond Kiss.
It’s a touching tale of a love that now dwells in the sweet mists of time as a fond memory! You’ll not hear a Scottish accent, but you will hear a poem that’s read from the heart. 😊
Here’s the text of the poem:
AE fond kiss by Robert Burns
Ae fond kiss, and then we sever;
Ae fareweel, and then forever!
Deep in heart-wrung tears I’ll pledge thee,
Warring sighs and groans I’ll wage thee.
Who shall say that Fortune grieves him,
While the star of hope she leaves him?
Me, nae cheerfu’ twinkle lights me;
Dark despair around benights me.
I’ll ne’er blame my partial fancy,
Naething could resist my Nancy;
But to see her was to love her;
Love but her, and love forever.
Had we never lov’d sae kindly,
Had we never lov’d sae blindly,
Never met—or never parted—
We had ne’er been broken-hearted.
Fare thee weel, thou first and fairest!
Fare thee weel, thou best and dearest!
Thine be ilka joy and treasure,
Peace. enjoyment, love, and pleasure!
Ae fond kiss, and then we sever;
Ae fareweel, alas, forever!
Deep in heart-wrung tears I’ll pledge thee,
Warring sighs and groans I’ll wage thee!
Isn’t it lovely? Perhaps we’ve all been there. And, this can apply to other circumstances of our life. Missed opportunities in career, and other areas of life. But the real power is in the now! We can learn from past memories, and whilst we can’t bring the circumstances back, we can bring the feeling to us again in a more modern up to date way…different situation, same feeling. No chance is ever lost. Things come and go, just like the tide.
